SPS — Smart Production Solutions is scheduled for 24–26 November 2026 in Nuremberg, Germany. The organizer positions the event around practical industrial automation, from sensors and drives to controls, communications and manufacturing software.
It is not exclusively a machine-tool exhibition, but its relevance to CNC manufacturers is increasing as production cells exchange more information with shop-floor systems. A machine may cut accurately while still lacking reliable connections to scheduling, tool management and quality reporting.
Why CNC professionals should follow an automation fair
The practical value of automation depends on whether production information reaches the right system at the right time.
For example, a CNC machine can report a cycle complete, but a factory management system may still need to know which job, fixture and batch that cycle belongs to. Robot tending adds another layer of machine interlocks, workpiece identification and safe recovery. SPS exhibitors address the components and software used to build those connections, although individual solutions require application-specific integration.
The organizer identifies industrial AI as one focus of the 2026 programme. Manufacturers should approach AI demonstrations by asking which sensor data is actually used, what decision the software makes and how an operator can challenge or override an incorrect result. An algorithm's ability to recognize a pattern in a demonstration is not the same as validated process control. Industrial cybersecurity, version management and the maintenance of proprietary interfaces also deserve attention.
How to evaluate exhibitors
Machining companies planning a visit should first map their production architecture: machine controllers, networks, field devices, manufacturing software and legacy equipment. This makes it easier to identify whether an exhibitor offers a complete supported interface or merely a component that requires additional engineering. Ask about open standards, remote support, data ownership and the effort needed to commission a pilot line. Suppliers' productivity claims should be evaluated against an actual baseline such as manual reporting time or machine downtime.
SPS takes place at NürnbergMesse with a three-day schedule. Specific stage sessions, exhibitor lists and tickets should be checked on the official SPS website. For CNC Outlook readers, the event's significance lies in connecting machining to the larger automated production system rather than introducing a new cutting process.
