Renishaw's PH20 PLUS extends five-axis CMM probe reach by 107 mm. New PE20 modules, TP20 adapter support and specific UCC T5 requirements define the upgrade.

Renishaw's PH20 PLUS probe head extends the reach of five-axis touch-trigger measurement without changing the basic purpose of a coordinate measuring machine (CMM). The manufacturer specifies up to 300 mm of working length, measured from the head's A-axis center with a 50 mm stylus. That is an increase of 107 mm over the earlier PH20 configuration, or more than 50% according to Renishaw.

The number describes geometric access. It does not mean the head is 300 mm long, nor does it certify the dimensional uncertainty of every long-probe setup.

The system was introduced at IMTS 2026 as a replacement for the PH20, which Renishaw first launched in 2010. Instead of requiring the CMM's three linear axes to reposition for every touch, the technology can acquire points through head motion. Renishaw says that approach helps reduce the dynamic movement of the larger measuring structure during point acquisition. PH20 PLUS retains this principle while redesigning the probe interface to permit longer and heavier configurations.

For a precision machining supplier, added reach is relevant when the inspection program must access deep pockets, recesses or internal features that a shorter stylus cannot reach comfortably. A longer probe path may help avoid refixturing a large casting or changing machines for a particular feature.

Yet reducing set-ups is only useful if the resulting measurement remains traceable and repeatable under the component's actual datum strategy.

## A new kinematic interface, with a bridge to existing probe modules

The updated head uses new PE20 probe modules with a larger kinematic interface. Renishaw designed them to support the longer configurations enabled by PH20 PLUS. The system also accepts existing TP20 modules through the PB20 adapter, apart from the TP20 extended-force module.

This is a meaningful distinction for a plant with an established inspection library: previously qualified stylus assemblies and part programs may continue to be useful, but not every piece of probe hardware transfers without restriction.

Automatic probe changes remain part of the design. Renishaw describes a modular rack arrangement accommodating TP20 and PE20 modules, with temperature-controlled ports for the latter and electrical connections along the rack. A powered PCR20 rack can also support change operations. Such systems reduce operator handling when a component needs more than one stylus or probe configuration; they also introduce additional items to calibrate, clean and maintain.

The manufacturer says PH20 PLUS can be configured to reproduce the effective working length of an existing PH20 installation, a useful option when the immediate goal is a replacement rather than a redesigned measuring process. That does not eliminate the need to check collision envelopes and stylus clearance. On a complex workpiece, the head, adapter, body and fixture all occupy space even when the tip can theoretically reach a feature.

A second limit is the relationship between stylus length and measurement performance. Deflection, triggering forces, extension mass and the CMM environment all contribute to measurement behavior. The extra 107 mm should be read as available reach, not a blanket accuracy improvement.

An inspection team would need to validate the chosen stylus against its tolerances, recalibrate after relevant configuration changes, and compare results with reference features where appropriate.

## Controller compatibility needs an exact check

The broad product description says PH20 PLUS integrates with Renishaw's UCC control environment. The more specific [Renishaw support knowledge base](<https://renishaw.com/cmmsupport/knowledgebase/en/ph20-plus-probe-head--22122>) states that PH20 PLUS is available only with the UCC T5 controller, and requires UCCsuite version 5.13 or later.

Those requirements are important for retrofit projects: an existing CMM with an older UCC controller cannot be assumed to accept the replacement head unchanged. Engineering teams should verify controller, software, electrical connections and rack arrangements against the exact installed system.

The support documentation also specifies a vertical mounting orientation, an A-axis travel range of ±115° and continuous rotation on the B-axis. The stated operating temperature band is 15–35 °C. These are product parameters rather than a complete environmental uncertainty budget. They help define where the head may be installed and which articulations are possible, but the CMM's own performance specification and the inspection method still govern accepted results.

[Specialist coverage published September 14](<https://metrology.news/renishaw-boosts-cmm-reach-with-ph20-plus/>) focused on the extended reach and the upgrade path; Renishaw's current documentation provides the fuller compatibility details. Read together, they describe a product aimed at enlarging the set of features that can be inspected without moving the workpiece or changing the measurement strategy completely. They do not establish any universal increase in measured parts per hour for a particular shop.

The deciding engineering question is straightforward: do the previously inaccessible features become measurable with a qualified setup, or does the longer probing arrangement add enough calibration, collision or uncertainty constraints to offset the gain? PH20 PLUS is most relevant where access is already limiting the inspection plan. Its real value will emerge at the level of a verified feature and part program, not from a maximum working-length figure alone.
