SHINING 3D's EinScan Trak mixes optical tracking and detachable handheld scanning; selection depends on registration and working-volume requirements.

[EinScan Trak](<https://metrology.news/shining-3d-introduces-wireless-3d-scanning-and-tracking-system/>) tackles two measurement jobs with different physical constraints: positioning a scanner around a large component and inspecting a small feature that the tracking arrangement cannot easily reach. SHINING 3D's September 2026 system combines a tracked scanner with a detachable handheld mode.

In its tracked configuration, an optical tracker determines the scanner's position and orientation using markers attached to the scanning device. The user does not have to place those markers on every measured surface. That approach can be useful on panels, assemblies and other large objects where applying and later removing markers would add preparation work.

The second mode changes the relationship between equipment and part. Detaching the handheld device allows an operator to capture local details, including areas that may be hard to access from the tracking arrangement. But switching modes creates practical questions: how are the datasets registered, and what evidence establishes their combined dimensional accuracy?

[](<https://metrology.news/shining-3d-introduces-wireless-3d-scanning-and-tracking-system/>)Optical tracking can reduce the need to keep a part stationary relative to the scanner, but it does not remove the effects of measurement geometry. Line of sight, tracker location, the extent of the measurement volume and surface reflectivity still influence what can be acquired. A part with deep cavities or shiny machined faces may call for additional scanning positions. The measurement-volume question is especially relevant for large weldments and automotive body structures. The tracker must retain a dependable view of the scanner as the operator moves, and the geometry of the setup changes when the object blocks that view. Planning scanner positions, reference objects and overlapping areas is therefore part of the inspection program. A very large working envelope should not be treated as one continuous region of identical uncertainty; registration errors can accumulate when several separate datasets are combined.

## Large-part tracking depends on geometry

[](<https://metrology.news/shining-3d-introduces-wireless-3d-scanning-and-tracking-system/>)Handheld detail capture poses a different challenge. Small features may require a short stand-off distance or repeated passes that produce more local detail than the global scan. That can help a reverse-engineering workflow, but comparing the data to a drawing still requires the correct coordinate system. If an engineer uses the handheld result to redefine an edge or hole location, they should test the resulting feature against a qualified reference rather than assuming that increasing mesh density improves measurement accuracy.

For a CNC shop, there are two distinct use cases. Reverse engineering often seeks a useful geometric model from an existing object, whereas acceptance inspection requires a defensible tolerance decision on selected drawing characteristics. A dense-looking point cloud is not a substitute for an uncertainty statement at the feature being measured.

## Handheld detail and drawing acceptance are different tests

The system's flexibility is appealing for firms measuring a combination of large fabrications and smaller machined details. A sensible trial should include a reference artifact spanning the expected working volume, repeated scans and the steps required to join tracked and handheld measurements. The vendor announcement documents the two configurations, not a one-size-fits-all accuracy outcome.

[](<https://metrology.news/shining-3d-introduces-wireless-3d-scanning-and-tracking-system/>)For a shop moving between weldments and machined components, the relevant comparison is how consistently both scanning modes preserve a common reference. The most convincing demonstration ends with verified dimensions on a known part—not with a visually complete mesh.
